Dawei lies a little way up the Dawei River, where the estuary widens before it meets the Andaman Sea. On a map the town reads as a compact grid on the river's east bank. The streets are laid out in fairly regular blocks, and past the last houses they give way to paddy fields, plantations and the green ridges that run down this narrow strip of southern Myanmar.

It is the capital of Tanintharyi Region, the long southern arm of the country squeezed between the sea and the Thai border. The town is known for its wooden houses, its local dialect and the beaches of the peninsula to the west, where a road crosses low hills to reach the open coast. The estuary, the mudflats and the curving shoreline give the surrounding map a fluid, unfinished edge.

The wide channel sweeps along one side and the urban grid thins into farmland on the other, while fine lines trace the tributaries and tracks that link outlying villages.
