Dunfermline sits on rising ground a few miles north of the Firth of Forth, in west Fife. In the medieval period it was a seat of Scottish kings. The abbey founded under Queen Margaret in the eleventh century still stands at the top of the old town, and Robert the Bruce is buried there. Dunfermline was granted city status in 2022.
On a map the historic core is small and tightly packed, with streets climbing toward the abbey and the ruined palace beside it. To the west lies Pittencrieff Park, known locally as the Glen, where a wooded ravine cuts a curving line through the green. Beyond it, twentieth-century housing estates spread in loops and cul-de-sacs toward the farmland.
Dunfermline is also the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie. He gave Pittencrieff Park to the town and paid for the first of his many public libraries here.
