El Hermel sits at the northern end of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, near the springs of the Orontes, known locally as the Assi. The river runs through a deep green valley close to the town, in sharp contrast with the dry, open land around it. On a map the town spreads across the higher ground, its streets fanning out from a central area along the main roads.
Two monuments give El Hermel wider fame. The Qamouaa el Hermel, an ancient stone tower, stands alone on a hilltop south of the town. By the river is a cave monastery associated with Saint Maron, cut into the rock above the water. The Assi is also known for rafting, which few rivers in Lebanon can offer.
