Florissant lies in north St. Louis County, south of the Missouri River. On the map, most of the city consists of postwar residential streets, with curving drives and cul-de-sacs. In the old part of town, near the centre, a small grid of older streets survives.
Florissant was founded in the late 18th century by French settlers, and Old Town Florissant preserves buildings and street names from that period. The city grew rapidly in the decades after the Second World War. That growth accounts for its large residential areas.
