Fulwood is a residential district on the western side of Sheffield, where the city runs up against open country. From above, it is a web of curving avenues, crescents and quiet closes laid over rising ground, with large gardens and mature trees filling the spaces between houses. Few straight lines survive the hills here, and the street pattern follows the contours rather than a grid.
To the south, the Porter Brook runs through a wooded valley with a string of old mill dams, including Forge Dam, and a footpath that follows the water down toward the city. To the west the houses stop and fields and moorland take over, leading toward the Peak District. The map shows a clear edge where suburb meets countryside.
