Gangtok sits along a ridge in the eastern Himalaya, and from above its streets look very different from a plains city. Roads zigzag in tight hairpins and step down the hillside in layers, following the contours. Buildings cling to narrow terraces between them. As the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok is the state's administrative centre and the usual starting point for journeys towards Tsomgo Lake and the Nathu La pass on the border with Tibet.
