Ílion lies in the north-western part of the Athens basin, one of the municipalities that together make up the continuous urban area around the Greek capital. On a map there is no obvious point where it begins. The municipality was long known as Nea Liosia. Its current name recalls Ilion, the ancient name of Troy, which links a modern residential district to one of the oldest stories in Greek literature.
