Jining lies on the flat plain of southwestern Shandong. Water shapes much of its map. The Grand Canal, the long historic waterway that once connected the north and south of China, passes through the city. Its straight and gently bending sections cut across the street grid. To the south is Nansi Lake, a chain of shallow lakes whose open water fills a large part of the wider region.

The city itself is built on a regular pattern of broad avenues and long blocks, typical of a plains city. Older lanes cluster near the canal, where trade once centred. The Taibai Tower, associated with the poet Li Bai, stands near the old city. On a Jining map poster, the long, even lines of the canal and streets make a calm, orderly composition.

Jining administers Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius. The Temple, Cemetery and Kong Family Mansion there are listed by UNESCO. Zoucheng, the home of Mencius, is also part of the prefecture. This connection to China's philosophical tradition gives Jining a quiet cultural weight that goes well beyond its size or its modern industry.
