Kilindoni is the principal town and port of Mafia Island, which lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, south of Zanzibar and opposite the Rufiji River delta. The town sits on the island's western shore, facing the mainland, and is the main arrival point both for boats and for the airstrip that links the island with Dar es Salaam.
On a map the settlement is loose and low, with sandy roads branching from the waterfront into a landscape of coconut palms and small farms.
