From above, Kos town sits on the flat northeastern corner of its island. The streets fan out from a rounded harbour, where the Castle of the Knights guards the entrance, and the town then gives way to a long coastal strip. Across a narrow stretch of water, the Turkish coast near Bodrum is close enough to show on a wide frame.
Inside the town, the street pattern mixes periods. Excavated ancient areas, including the agora and sections of the Roman town, leave open blocks among the modern streets.
