Leipzig's map begins with the Ring, the boulevard that follows the line of the old city walls and encloses a small, dense centre of passages and courtyards. On its northeastern edge sits the Hauptbahnhof, one of the largest railway stations in Europe by floor area, with its wide fan of tracks. From the Ring, radial roads lead out to the Wilhelminian districts that surround the core.

Water crosses the city in several forms. The White Elster, the Pleisse and the Parthe wind through, and a broad band of floodplain forest, the Auwald, runs right past the centre. In the west, the Karl Heine Canal cuts through the old industrial district of Plagwitz. South of the city, flooded lignite pits have become the lakes of the Neuseenland, and their smooth outlines stand out on the map.

Leipzig's history is closely tied to music and change. Bach worked for decades at St Thomas Church, and the Monday demonstrations that began at St Nicholas Church in 1989 helped bring down the East German state.
