Marand lies in East Azerbaijan province, north-west of Tabriz, on the route that leads towards the Aras river and the border. On a map, the town spreads over a plain framed by mountains. Its main axis follows the regional road, and the streets branch off it into residential quarters. Walled gardens and orchards border the built-up area.
The town has long been a stop on the route between Tabriz and the lands to the north, and that function still shows in its layout. The main thoroughfares are long and direct.
