Marīvān lies in a high valley in Iran's Kurdistan Province, close to the border with Iraq. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets laid across the valley floor. On all sides it is bounded by the steep folds of the Zagros Mountains, whose ridges channel the roads that lead in and out. The surrounding terrain gives the map a strong, enclosed feel.
Just west of the town lies Lake Zarivar, a freshwater lake fringed with reeds and backed by wooded slopes. It is one of the best-known natural sights in the region. Marīvān is also a busy trading town, shaped by its position near the border crossing and by the cross-border markets that draw shoppers from across western Iran.
