Marks lies on the left bank of the Volga, northeast of Saratov, on the flat steppe that stretches east from the river. From above, its most striking feature is the regular street grid. Long straight streets cross at right angles, a pattern that goes back to the town's founding as a planned colony in the eighteenth century.
The town was founded in 1767 as Katharinenstadt, a settlement of German colonists invited to Russia by Catherine the Great. It became a centre of the Volga Germans and was renamed Marxstadt, later Marks, after Karl Marx. A Marks map poster shows how that colonial plan still shapes the city today.
To the west, the Volga spreads wide, with backwaters, islands and channels breaking up the shoreline. To the east, fields run in long strips across the steppe. Between river and farmland, the orderly grid of Marks sits like a carefully ruled page.
