Mlolongo lies in Machakos County, just southeast of Nairobi, on the busy Mombasa Road that links the capital to the coast. From above, it is a linear town. Its densest streets line the highway, and newer estates and residential lanes spread back from it across the flat, open Athi plains. The pattern is that of a place growing quickly and filling in the space between older landmarks.
The town has grown as part of Nairobi's expanding metropolitan fringe, drawing commuters and businesses with its location near the airport, industrial areas and the main road to Mombasa. Its setting on the plains means wide skies and long views, with Nairobi National Park not far to the west and the town of Athi River to the southeast.
