Mpika is a small town on the high plateau of northeastern Zambia. On a map its layout is simple: a compact centre built along the Great North Road, with side streets spreading out into residential areas and open land, and long straight routes heading off into the bush.
The town is a transport junction. The Great North Road runs through it toward Tanzania, and the TAZARA railway, which links Zambia to the port of Dar es Salaam, has a station here. To the east, the land drops down the Muchinga Escarpment toward the Luangwa Valley and its national parks.
