Murom sits on the left bank of the Oka in the east of Vladimir Oblast, and from above the river sets the whole composition. The town climbs from the water onto a raised bank cut by ravines, with the historic centre close to the edge overlooking the Oka. Beyond it the streets form a looser grid, and forest and floodplain meadows spread along the opposite shore.
Murom is one of the oldest towns in Russia, mentioned in chronicles as early as 862. It is linked with the epic hero Ilya Muromets and with Saints Peter and Fevronia, whose feast day is celebrated in Russia as a day of family and love. Monasteries and churches still mark the old centre, and a cable-stayed bridge opened in 2009 crosses the Oka.
