Nordaustlandet is the second-largest island in Svalbard, lying northeast of Spitsbergen across the Hinlopen Strait. It has no roads and no permanent residents, so its map is a study in pure shape. It shows a heavy, rounded landmass edged by fjords, bays and small islands, far up in the high Arctic, where the sea is frozen for much of the year.
Two ice caps cover most of the island. Austfonna in the east is one of the largest ice caps in Europe by area, and much of its edge meets the sea as a long wall of ice cliffs.
