Nyandoma is a town in Arkhangelsk Oblast, in the Russian north, on the railway line that connects Moscow with Arkhangelsk. The town grew around its station after the line was built at the end of the nineteenth century, and the railway remains its central feature. Tracks, yards and sidings run through the town and shape everything around them.
The street plan is largely regular, with rectangular blocks set out on both sides of the line. Beyond the last streets, the map opens into forest, bog and lakes, the typical landscape of the northern taiga. The town reads as a clear, bounded pattern of lines surrounded by unbroken wilderness.
