Ołbin Map Poster

Ołbin is a district of Wrocław, lying on the northern side of the Oder, just across the river from the historic islands of Ostrów Tumski. Its name goes back to a medieval Benedictine abbey that once stood here, demolished in the sixteenth century to strengthen the city's defences. Today the area is mostly residential, and on a map it reads as one of Wrocław's densest neighbourhoods.

The streets form a fairly regular grid of long blocks, mostly lined with tenement buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Courtyards open inside many blocks, and green spaces and churches punctuate the pattern. To the south, the Oder and its branches wind around islands and bridges, drawing a clear boundary between Ołbin and the old town.

An Ołbin map poster shows that dense urban grid beside the loops of the river. In black and white, the repetition of blocks gives a strong, almost graphic rhythm, while the water and the islands add curving lines.
