Palmdale lies in the Antelope Valley on the western edge of the Mojave Desert, north of Los Angeles across the San Gabriel Mountains. On a map the city is a broad, open grid of long straight avenues and numbered streets, set roughly a mile apart, with neighbourhoods filling some squares and desert still occupying others. The mountains rise sharply along the southern boundary.

Palmdale is also central to American aerospace: Air Force Plant 42, where aircraft have been built and tested for decades, occupies a large area of the city, including its long runways.
