Ponce is Puerto Rico's principal city on the south coast, facing the Caribbean across a broad coastal plain. From above, the historic centre forms a compact grid around a formal plaza. The city spreads south towards the port and the waterfront, and north towards the foothills of the Cordillera Central. Port and La Guancha
