Schleswig sits at the inner end of the Schlei, a long, narrow arm of the Baltic that reaches far inland. On a map the town traces the northern shoreline in a shallow curve. The water lies open to the south and east, and the built-up streets thin out toward fields and woodland to the north. The Schlei itself reads as a pale ribbon that widens and narrows as it heads toward the sea.
The historic centre clusters around St. Peter's Cathedral, whose spire marks the old town's densest block of lanes. To the west, Gottorf Castle stands on its own island, joined to the mainland by causeways. Near the shore, the Holm fishing quarter keeps its small houses around a circular cemetery, and the ring shows up clearly even at small scales.
