Switchback roads
Routes into and out of the town bend repeatedly to handle the slopes. On the print they form long, looping lines that stand out against the open mountainside.

Shigang Map Poster & Print
Shigang is in the far northeast of Chongqing Municipality, in the mountains that frame the Three Gorges stretch of the Yangtze. From above, the terrain is dramatic. Ridges are tightly packed, valleys are deep and narrow, and there's very little flat ground. The town sits on whatever level land the valley offers, and the rest of the map is mostly slope.
The roads show that. They loop and switch back to gain or lose height, following contours instead of straight lines. The built-up area is small and compact, packed into the space the landform allows. Beyond it, fields and villages cling to terraces and spurs, and only thin tracks connect them.
A Shigang map poster shows a mountain town from above. The centre is small and dense, and the long curving lines around it tell you how steep the land is. It suits people from the area and anyone who has travelled the mountain roads of eastern Chongqing.

Compact centre
With little flat land available, the town's streets are packed closely together. The result is a small, dense core that contrasts with the sparse surroundings.
Mountain valleys
Narrow valleys cut between the ridges and carry streams toward the larger river system. They give the map its underlying direction and structure.
