Southend-on-Sea lies on the north shore of the Thames Estuary in Essex, where the river widens toward the North Sea. The map is framed by water to the south: a long, straight seafront running east to west, and beyond it broad mudflats exposed at low tide. Inland, the streets form a regular pattern of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, with main roads leading west toward London.
The town's best-known feature is Southend Pier, which stretches more than two kilometres into the estuary and is often described as the longest pleasure pier in the world.
