Sugai lies in the south of Kyoto Prefecture, in the gentle country between Kyoto and Nara. This part of the prefecture mixes older villages, farmland and newer residential areas. On a map it appears as a patchwork: irregular lanes in the older settlements next to the neater curves and cul-de-sacs of planned housing.
Wooded hills cover much of the land here. The valleys hold fields, and the roads follow the lower ground.
