Tasikmalaya lies in the southeastern part of West Java, on an elevated plain in the Priangan highlands. From above, the city forms a dense centre from which roads branch outward through a patchwork of villages, rice fields and small rivers. Mount Galunggung, an active volcano, rises to the northwest and shapes the land around the city.
The central district is organised around the town square and great mosque, with commercial streets and closely packed neighbourhoods spreading from it. Further out the pattern loosens, and the map shows long ribbons of houses along roads with open farmland between them, a form typical of Javanese towns and their surrounding villages.
The city is known for its crafts, including embroidery, woven bamboo and traditional painted paper umbrellas.
