Vesoul is the préfecture of Haute-Saône in eastern France. The town spreads along the Durgeon valley at the base of La Motte, an isolated hill with a chapel and statue on its summit. On a map, the hill appears as a solid shape with few or no streets, and the older quarter wraps tightly around its southern slope.
The historic centre keeps a medieval layout of narrow streets around the Saint-Georges church, while newer districts spread out across flatter ground toward the railway and the ring roads. To the southwest, the Lac de Vaivre forms a large, smooth body of water at the edge of town.
