Vişeu de Sus lies in the north of Romania's Maramureş region, at the edge of the Maramureş Mountains. The town follows the valleys. From above, it stretches along the Vişeu river and the mouth of the Vaser, with streets tightly packed on the valley floor and houses climbing the lower slopes. Forested ridges rise on every side, leaving only narrow strips of level ground.
The town is best known for the Mocăniţa, a narrow-gauge forestry railway that still runs steam trains up the Vaser valley into the mountains. It is one of the last working forestry railways of its kind in Europe, and it draws visitors from far away. Logging and timber have long shaped the local economy and the town itself.
