Oxon Hill lies in Prince George's County, across the Potomac from Alexandria and a short distance south of Washington, D.C. On a map it is shaped by roads. The Capital Beltway sweeps through toward the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Indian Head Highway and Oxon Hill Road run north to south, and residential streets curl between them in the looping patterns of postwar American suburbs.
The western edge is water. The Potomac shoreline bends past Oxon Cove and the waterfront development of National Harbor, where a tight grid of new streets contrasts with the curving cul-de-sacs further inland. Stream valleys and wooded parkland break up the housing, so the black-and-white drawing alternates between dense street patterns and open, quiet spaces.
