Rochford is a small market town in south-east Essex, just north of Southend-on-Sea. It sits near the tidal head of the River Roach, which winds east from here through salt marshes toward the North Sea. On a map, the historic centre forms a small, compact cluster of streets around a square, with newer housing spreading out on the sides.
The town has medieval origins, and its market square remains the centre of the street plan. Rochford Hall, on the edge of town, is associated with the Boleyn family. To the south, London Southend Airport takes up a large area, its runway forming a strong straight line that contrasts with the organic lanes of the old town.
