Ajalpan lies in south-eastern Puebla, in the Tehuacán Valley, a short distance from the city of Tehuacán. On a map the town forms a grid of streets on the gently sloping valley floor, while to the east the land rises into the Sierra Negra, where roads become narrow and winding and settlements scatter across steep ground.
The Tehuacán Valley holds a central place in the study of early agriculture in Mesoamerica, and one of the early archaeological phases in the valley's long sequence of human occupation carries Ajalpan's name.
