Al ‘Ayzarīyah lies just east of Jerusalem, on the far side of the Mount of Olives, where the ground begins to fall toward the Judaean Desert. On a map the town is a dense tangle of streets that follow the contours of steep hillsides. Houses step up and down the slopes. The town is the site of biblical Bethany, and its Arabic name comes from Lazarus. The old road from Jerusalem to Jericho passes through, and for centuries the town has been a stopping place on that route.
Its recent geography has been shaped by the separation barrier, which divides the town from Jerusalem and has lengthened journeys that were once short walks.
