Al Bahah sits in the Sarawat Mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia at more than 2,000 metres. Its cooler climate makes it a popular summer destination. From above, the city is spread across ridges and valleys, with streets that curve to follow the terrain rather than a fixed grid. Neighbourhoods cluster on level ground, separated by slopes and ravines.
To the west, the land falls away sharply along the escarpment toward the Tihama coastal plain, one of the most dramatic changes of elevation in the Arabian Peninsula.
