Alagoinhas lies in the interior of Bahia, a little over a hundred kilometres from Salvador, on low sandy land between the coast and the drier sertão. The ground is gentle, so the streets form a fairly regular pattern around the centre. Toward the outskirts they loosen into larger blocks and open lots. Alagoinhas grew with the railway in the nineteenth century, when lines from Salvador reached here and continued inland.
