Banan is a district of Chongqing municipality lying south of the city's historic core, with the Yangtze River running along it. The terrain is typical of the region: steep ridges, deep valleys and very little flat land, so streets bend around hillsides, climb in switchbacks and link separate pockets of development rather than forming a continuous grid.
The district centre at Yudong sits beside the Yangtze, where the riverbank sets the direction of the main roads.
