Banyoles is in the province of Girona, and its map is dominated by the Estany de Banyoles, the largest natural lake in Catalonia. The lake is long and narrow, lying north to south, with an irregular shoreline edged by reeds, small inlets and a waterside promenade. The town sits along its eastern side.
Water continues into the town itself. A network of old channels, known locally as recs, runs from the lake through the historic centre.
