Bareilly sits on the flat plain of western Uttar Pradesh, near the Ramganga River. The land is almost entirely level, so the map is shaped by roads, railways and the cantonment rather than terrain. Bareilly was a centre of the Rohilla chiefs in the eighteenth century, and the surrounding region is still called Rohilkhand.
