Blangpidie is the administrative centre of Southwest Aceh Regency, on the west coast of Sumatra. The setting is dramatic: the Indian Ocean on one side and the forested Barisan mountains rising not far inland. The town occupies the narrow coastal plain between them, and on a map it appears as a modest street network stretched along the main coastal road.
Around the town, the land is mostly rice fields, plantations and rivers flowing down from the mountains to the sea.
