Brajarajnagar lies in the Jharsuguda district of western Odisha, close to the Ib River and within the Ib Valley coalfield. The town grew around industry rather than an old market centre, and its map reflects that: residential colonies arranged in orderly blocks, main roads linking them, and large industrial sites that interrupt the street pattern with broad open spaces.
For decades the town was known for the Orient Paper Mills, one of the largest paper factories in India, whose sprawling site and worker housing shaped much of the town's layout.
