Butajira lies in the highlands of central Ethiopia, south of Addis Ababa, near the western edge of the Great Rift Valley. It is a market and administrative centre for a farming region, and from above, it shows a town that has grown outwards from a central crossroads, with main roads leading off in several directions.
The centre has a denser grid of streets, while further out, blocks become larger and less regular, with compounds and gardens between the houses. Beyond the edges, farmland covers the gently rolling ground, and the landscape drops away towards the Rift Valley lakes to the east.
