Cran-Gevrier lies just west of central Annecy, on the Thiou, the short river that drains Lake Annecy. It was a separate commune until 2017, when it merged into the new commune of Annecy. The Thiou is the thread that holds it together. Mills and factories once stood along its banks, including a long-running paper mill, and the river's line still organises the streets nearby.
