Dhrāngadhra lies in northern Saurashtra in Gujarat, on flat, dry land not far from the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. On a map the old town shows as a dense knot of irregular lanes, clearly set apart from the straighter roads and newer neighbourhoods that have grown around it. The town was the capital of a princely state ruled by the Jhala Rajput dynasty, and its palaces and institutions reflect that past. It later became known for soda ash and chemical production and for Dhrāngadhra stone, a sandstone used in buildings across the region. The nearby Little Rann is home to the Indian wild ass sanctuary.
