Edfu lies on the west bank of the Nile in Aswan governorate, roughly midway between Luxor and Aswan. From above, the Nile valley is shown at its simplest: the river, a narrow band of irrigated farmland on each side, and then desert. Edfu is known for the Temple of Horus, built in the Ptolemaic period and widely regarded as the best-preserved temple in Egypt.
