Fīrūzkūh lies high in the Alborz range, east of Tehran. On a map the town follows a narrow valley, its streets pressed into a long, tapering shape between steep slopes. The mountains around it appear as wide, empty ground, which makes the thin band of settlement all the more striking. This is a town where the terrain decides almost everything.
The town is on an important route between the capital and Mazandaran province on the Caspian coast. The Trans-Iranian Railway crosses the area, passing through tunnels and climbing steep grades on its way through the mountains.
