Gangneung lies on the east coast of South Korea, on a narrow strip of lowland between the steep Taebaek range and the sea. The city centre spreads along the Namdaecheon stream. To the north-east the shoreline curves around Gyeongpo, where a shallow lagoon lake sits just behind the beach, separated from open water by a slim bar of sand.
The city hosted the ice events of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and the arenas built for them still stand out as a distinct group of large footprints on the map.
