Gaoliang lies in the steep, folded country of north-eastern Chongqing, a municipality where flat land is scarce and every settlement has to negotiate with the terrain. From above, the town's roads follow contours and valley floors, and buildings cluster where the ground allows, leaving terraced fields and wooded ridges to fill the spaces between.
This part of Chongqing belongs to the wider Yangtze basin, and the rivers and gorges of the region have shaped how towns like this one grew and how they connect to the outside.
