Gaspar lies in the Itajaí valley in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, between Blumenau and the coast. From above, the Itajaí-Açu river is the defining feature. It winds through the valley in wide loops, and the town sits along its banks. Wooded hills rise on both sides, limiting where streets and neighbourhoods can grow.
The region was settled largely by European immigrants in the nineteenth century, and its towns share a similar pattern: a centre near the river, with roads and houses following the valley floor and side valleys.
