Geilo lies in Hallingdal in Buskerud, at the edge of the high country that leads up to the Hardangervidda plateau. The village is small and easy to read on a map. The houses gather close to the railway station, a lake stretches beside them, and the ski slopes climb the hills above. The Bergen Line has run through Geilo for more than a century, and the railway explains the village's shape. Streets grow outward from the station in a loose network, with cabins and hotels spreading onto the hillsides. Geilo is one of Norway's longest-established winter resorts. It is known for cross-country trails as much as for its lifts, and in good snow years the trails run out across the open ground.
