Guadalajara spreads across the Atemajac Valley in western Mexico, roughly 1,500 metres above sea level. The city is built on a long grid of streets that extends almost uniformly in every direction. From above, this grid is the dominant texture, with the Periférico ring road forming a large, irregular loop around much of the metropolitan area and the older districts packed inside it.
At the centre, the cathedral is surrounded by four plazas arranged in the shape of a Latin cross, a layout visible on any detailed map.
